Elect Cathy Salchert

Cathy moved to Avon in 2004 with her husband Andrew and when their two children were still preschool age, Rosemary, 3 at the time, and Brian just 13 months old. She put her career as a municipal attorney on hold while raising their family, working part-time and also volunteering at school, chaperoning field trips and serving on the Thompson Brook School PTO.

A Connecticut native, (raised in West Hartford), Cathy followed local politics, for years and considered a career in journalism, but instead majored in political science, volunteered for numerous campaigns while living and studying in Massachusetts.

She became active in politics again in 2016 traveling to Florida on behalf of Hillary Clinton’s campaign to help with voter protection.

Cathy did not envision herself as a candidate for office but volunteered to run for Board of Finance when asked to serve in that role. A key motivation was to demonstrate that “politics” is actually about public service and that we make the best decisions when people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives come together to make decisions [in the best interest of our town.]

Cathy’s first run for the Board of Finance in 2017 was an accomplishment for a first-time candidate, failing to win a seat by about 100 votes. She was appointed to a fill a vacancy in February of 2019 and had to run that November to keep the seat. She ended up being the highest vote getter on the Board that time around, garnering votes from Republicans she knew who confided she was “the only Democrat” for whom they voted.
